Coaching is a powerful method of ensuring people achieve to their full potential. All too often, coaching is only proposed when there is a specific issue to be addressed and an individual has asked for (or has been advised to get) support. Coaching can be so much more than this. 

Coaching can help leaders to find the space and time to prioritise, re-energise and to reflect on what they have learnt, how they see the future for their organisation and the opportunities and risks the broader landscape presents.

Our coaching service is ideal for:

  • CEOs and trust leaders who want to ensure that they’re working to their full potential and want clarification on their priorities;
  • CEO/trust leader designates as part of their development journey;
  • new trustees who are experienced in other sectors but are new to education and want to quickly get to grips with their new role; and
  • Chairs of Trustees - particularly prior to periods of significant change. 

Coaching tailored for education leaders

Coaching adds value to you and your institution. School and academy leaders undertake coaching for a variety of reasons:

  • Leadership can be lonely at the best of times. Throughout the pandemic, school leaders have had to ‘don their superhero cloaks’ for the benefit of the school community, with little time to look far into the future. Coaching provides the opportunity to discuss and process everything that you have accomplished.
  • A decade into the expanded academies programme, a new cohort of executive leaders and CEOs are set to take the sector forward. Unlike their predecessors (who often grew the trust from one school or a small group of schools), these new leaders will be stepping in to lead complex organisations from the outset, possibly in their first leadership role. Coaching provides space and time to enable them to get to grips with their role and identify key priorities.
  • In education terms (at least), the last three or four years have been stable from a policy perspective – with a completely new ministerial team in situ at the Department for Education. Now that the pandemic and Brexit’s demands on the Government’s time have been reduced, we are likely to experience a more dynamic policy environment looking ahead. Coaching provides space and time to help you prepare for a period of significant change.

How our coaching service works

Successful coaching relies on a strong relationship of trust between you and your coach.  Our service includes an initial, free of charge session to ensure that both you and your coach (and if your trust wants to be actively involved as a sponsor, then your sponsor too) are confident that the relationship will work. In this session we’ll agree an approach and the parameters for future sessions.

You then have the choice of four sessions across a term - usually three weeks apart - or a programme of 12 sessions over an academic year. Halfway through the coaching period, a review will be scheduled to check that the sessions are achieving your objectives.

Our coaches will work with you to provide the support and challenge you need to move forward with your goals. Our approach helps ambitious leaders drive forward with increased awareness and focus.

Coaching sessions are usually 60 to 90 minutes in duration but can be tailored to best meet your needs. A mix of face-to-face and online sessions are offered.

Emma has over 15 years’ experience in generalist HR in both the private sector and the public sector. Emma has worked as HR Director and regional HR Business Partner for two large, national school trusts and she has held various governance roles including Chair of a 16-school trust. Emma has led the HR consultancy practice at Browne Jacobson since 2017 and, as well as providing HR services to education clients, Emma also provides executive coaching as a qualified and accredited coach.

In addition to providing corporate and governance advice to education institutions, Nick also provides executive coaching support as a qualified and accredited executive coach. Nick sits on the firm’s board and in 2019 was invited to join the board of the Foundation for Education Development.
