Net Zero and Sustainability: Re-imagining the education estate for higher and further education providers

Please join us for Net Zero and Sustainability: Re-imagining the education estate for higher and further education providers, followed by the Association of University Legal Practitioners (AULP) Wales regional meeting.

This event aims to empower and inspire higher and further education providers to re-imagine the education estate and deliver on Net Zero and sustainability whilst ensuring longevity, robustability, and a market-leading student experience.

The panel will be chaired by Trish D’Souza, Browne Jacobson’s Education lead for Wales. Across 2 x 50-minute sessions, we’ll cover the following the topics:

1. Student contracts and experience: Trish will discuss best practice when seeking student and stakeholder buy in to create change in the Education estate, including the interplay between the consumer protection regime, student contracts and the student experience.

2. Net Zero and sustainability commitments: Ben Standing, Partner in Browne Jacobson’s Planning and Environmental team, will explain how to integrate meaningful Net Zero and sustainability commitments in the development and operation of the education estate, including strategies for carbon footprint reduction and sustainable resource management.

3. Designing and developing the education estate: Owen Rees, Associate Director at Atkins Realis will present solutions for designing and developing an education estate which delivers longevity, robust ability and success in achieving your net zero and sustainability.

4. Modern methods of construction: A regional contractor will provide insight into their lived experience of a range of modern methods of construction intended to deliver net zero and sustainability solutions.

5. Funding mechanisms: Anthony Swallow of Swallow Consulting Ltd shall mention innovative funding sources for education providers in Wales. This includes government grants, private investments, and partnerships, as well as financial strategies for supporting sustainable initiatives.

6. Procurement and sustainability: Scott Mounfield, Partner in Browne Jacobson’s Construction team, will review practical solutions for resolving the challenge of committing project supply chains to embed best practice in net zero and sustainability in project delivery, including issues arising from the Procurement Act and the Well-being of Future Generations Act.

There will then be a light lunch provided before the AULP regional meeting session between 11.40am - 12.40pm.

This session, co-hosted by Megan Wiggins, In-House Solicitor and Executive Committee member at AULP and Trish D’Souza, Legal Director of Browne Jacobson, will facilitate a roundtable discussion to explore how in-house legal teams can work with external lawyers on Net Zero and Sustainability.
