Germany designates Browne Jacobson’s Bernhard Maier to the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators and Conciliators

05 January 2026

Bernhard Maier, Partner and Head of Browne Jacobson’s Arbitration Group, has been designated by Germany to the ICSID list of Arbitrators and Conciliators, as a Conciliator.

This prestigious designation is a significant milestone both for Bernhard and for Browne Jacobson as a firm. It represents formal recognition by Germany of his exceptional expertise and standing in the field of investment treaty arbitration.

Bernhard commented: “This appointment represents not only personal recognition but also reflects Browne Jacobson's growing strength and reputation in international arbitration and investment treaty disputes. This designation reinforces our firm's commitment to delivering excellence in complex, cross-border dispute resolution for our clients."

Richard Cox, Head of the firm’s International Group, added: “This designation is a testament to Bernhard expertise and our firm's expanding international capabilities. The firm’s growth is enabling us to better serve our clients while attracting new international clients who require sophisticated expertise in navigating today's increasingly complex geopolitical and regulatory landscape."

ICSID, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, is the leading institution for the settlement of investment disputes between States and nationals of other States. Each State party to the ICSID Convention can designate four arbitrators and four conciliators to the respective ICSID Panels. ICSID appoints arbitrators from the Panel when the parties do not agree or fail to make an appointment. ICSID also appoints all members of ICSID ad hoc Committees tasked with scrutinising the compliance of awards with the requirements of the ICSID Convention.

The designation is for a period of six years and follows the thorough and rigorous selection process carried out under the auspices of the German Ministry for Economics and Energy in Berlin.

Bernhard's designation reflects Browne Jacobson's expanding presence and growing reputation in international arbitration and cross-border dispute resolution. The firm's international arbitration practice advises states, corporates, investors and leading organisations on all aspects of commercial and investment treaty arbitration, as well as complex matters of public international law.
