Browne Jacobson barrister and solicitor appointed as Deputy District Judges
Two Browne Jacobson lawyers have been appointed as Deputy District Judges by The Lady Chief Justice, The Rt Hon Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill.
Luke Berry, Legal Director and Barrister, will sit on the Western Circuit and Catherine Flannery, Senior Associate, will sit on the Northern Circuit.
Both will hear civil cases relating to matters such as claims arising from road traffic accidents, personal injury, housing possession and family law injunctions, as well as small claims between businesses.
The Deputy District Judge role is a part-time, known as “fee-paid”, judicial appointment. This allows Luke and Catherine to continue their work at Browne Jacobson alongside their judicial responsibilities.
Luke, who leads the Exeter barrister team, is the first member of Browne Jacobson’s in-house barrister team to be appointed as a Deputy District Judge.
Acting for some of the firm’s biggest healthcare clients, Luke provides robust advocacy and pragmatic advice on personal injury, clinical negligence, mental health, inquest and family disputes involving medical evidence.
Catherine, who is based in Browne Jacobson’s Manchester office, sits in the health advisory and litigation team within the firm’s health and life sciences practice. She has extensive experience of representing NHS trusts and private healthcare providers at complex and high-profile inquests.
Fiona Butler, Partner and head of the barristers’ team at Browne Jacobson, said: “We are very proud of Luke in being the first of our employed barristers to receive this recognition. Being appointed as a Deputy District Judge is a distinguished achievement for anyone involved in advocacy or litigation work.”
Ed Pollard, Partner in the health advisory and inquest team, added: “Catherine is a specialist in inquests who brings to the Deputy District Judge role not only her experience at Browne Jacobson, but also insights from a background working in-house at the General Medical Council and a medical defence organisation.”
