Insurance law
Browne Jacobson's insurance team is a market leader across three core areas: insurance policy drafting and distribution, insurance intermediary mergers and acquisitions, and broader commercial insurance work.
The team is also recognised for its established expertise in insurance and reinsurance disputes, financial services regulatory enforcement work, and handling cases across a number of different classes of business.
Why choose us?
Our insurance team combines genuine market-leading specialism across advisory and contentious work with a full-service commercial offer, giving clients a truly joined-up service wherever they need us. Here is why leading insurers, intermediaries and MGAs choose us:
- The market-leading policy wordings team: We are market-leading for insurance policy drafting and distribution, with unique services including wide-scale customer testing, readability analysis by linguistics professors, and the application of the Plain Numbers approach.
- The 'go-to' for insurance intermediary M&A: We are a 'go-to' in the insurance intermediary M&A space, acting for some of the most active consolidators in the market. We have become particularly well known for our ability to combine a top 20 dealmaking M&A practice with in-depth insurance sector knowledge to deliver a truly joined-up approach.
- Recognised by leading legal directories: Our insurance team is highly ranked in the 2025/2026 legal directories, particularly for our work in contentious claims, professional negligence, and corporate/regulatory matters. We recently achieved its strongest-ever performance in the Chambers UK 2026 and Legal 500 UK 2025 guides. In particular, we entered the Legal 500 UK 2025 Guide Tier 1 ranking for financial services and insurance.
- Award-winning work with proven outcomes: The team won a bronze award in the Business Partner of the Year category at the prestigious Insurance Times Awards 2024. For NFU Mutual, independent linguistic analysis showed we reduced the reading age of its suite of personal lines and motor policies by over eight years, with very favourable feedback from the client's customer base.
- International reach: We are the sole English member firm of the Harmonie Group, a network of independent specialist insurance law firms throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia and worldwide, giving the team genuine international reach. The Harmonie Group now has 103 member firms, covering every US State, every province in Canada, and worldwide.
- Active across the insurance market ecosystem: We are associate members of the British Insurance Brokers Association and the Managing General Agents Association and are trusted advisers to leading brokers and broker networks including Howden, Arthur J Gallagher, Clear, Jensten and Atlanta. We are a leading firm for InsurTech businesses, in part thanks to our innovative 'Grow' programme, and are listed in the FinTech category for both the Legal 500 and Chambers.
“A highly knowledgeable team of specialists with all the skills and smarts of the very best law firms, but with the advantage of working closely together. Their support for junior staff also breeds loyalty and a real ‘roll your sleeves’ up attitude that benefits the team.”
Insurance services
Over the last decade we have built what is undeniably the market-leading policy wordings team, appointed by a large number of insurers including Hiscox, Beazley, CNA Hardy, Accredited, NFU Mutual, the Lloyd's Market Association, Corvelia, IGI, Travelers, MS Amlin, iprism, Simply Business, Sompo, Omnyy and AmTrust.
We are particularly well known for our focus on clear policy drafting, having developed unique services including wide-scale customer testing, readability analysis by linguistics professors, and the application of the Plain Numbers approach (the only law firm to be an accredited Plain Numbers partner). For NFU Mutual, independent linguistic analysis showed a reduction in reading age of over eight years. We were also trusted by the Lloyd's Market Association to draft its Consumer Wordings Guidance document, the authoritative market-facing document on policy wordings. The scale of that work speaks for itself: in the last year alone the team drafted over 1,250 bespoke policy endorsements and advised on over 100 scheme wordings for Hiscox.
In the insurance intermediary M&A space we are a clear 'go-to', acting for some of the most active consolidators in the market, including Howden, Clear, Jensten, Arthur J Gallagher and Bespoke, as well as advising private equity and other funders (including Apiary and R Capital) on their investments into insurance intermediaries. Having become particularly well known for our ability to combine a top 20 dealmaking M&A practice with in-depth insurance sector knowledge, we acted on over 40 such acquisitions in the last 12 months alone.
Alongside M&A, we advise on the full range of complex commercial arrangements including TOBAs, delegated authority agreements, risk transfer agreements, TPA agreements and the creation of new MGAs from inception.
We provide specialist insurance regulatory advice across the full lifecycle of insurance business: from FCA and PRA authorisations and governance, to solvency and capital, product development and distribution, and regulatory enforcement. Our regulatory expertise is particularly valued in the context of intermediary acquisitions, where we advise clients such as Howden and Jensten on compliance risks and smooth integration.
