Shared Insights: Domestic violence and safeguarding
This Shared Insights forum took place on 10 February 2026.
This session covered responses to concerns relating to domestic abuse. It highlights where the responses of health, care and other public bodies most frequently fall short, as a basis for improving outcomes and reducing the harm that is caused to victims and those around them.
The Domestic Abuse Commissioner, recently said domestic abuse is “one of the most deeply damaging and pervasive issues that our society faces” and the cost to England and Wales is estimated at £89.3 billion. Those who access health and care services are at significantly increased risk of domestic abuse, while the harms caused often extend to children and young people, with impacts for life, and down generations. The Government has committed to reduce violence against women and girls, and the case for action on domestic abuse is clear.
In this session we heard from a person with experience of domestic abuse and of social services intervention in her family. She hopes to share her story with you, to support understanding of how the actions of health and care organisations shape the experience of victims, and how victims can be supported in the best possible way.
We were joined by Christopher Griffin, a Domestic Abuse Related Death Review Chair, who shared actionable insights from his work which can help organisations prevent or reduce harm from domestic abuse. Our legal experts answered questions around duties and powers pertaining to domestic abuse concerns.
