Spotlight on: Anya Yaseen, Senior Associate
Anya is a Senior Associate specialising in mental capacity, mental health and deprivation of liberty law.
Anya recalls her early career trajectory and decision to pursue this area of law, her highlights working at Browne Jacobson and an unforgettable trip to Nottingham court.
How did you get into mental health and mental capacity law?
It was a happy accident. I originally fell into a public law paralegal role – initially acting for claimants and the protected party – and quickly found myself quickly captivated by the world of mental health and mental capacity law.
What do you like about working in mental health and mental capacity law?
No two days are ever the same! There’s a real variety to the work – plenty of client contact, drafting, attending hearings, meetings – and more often than not, you’re helping clients to improve a vulnerable person’s quality of life.
What are some of the best aspects of working at Browne Jacobson?
Without question, the people! My team is made up of brilliant lawyers who are also down to earth and genuinely supportive of each other. I’ve made some real friends at Browne Jacobson, often starting with a smile and hello, which is not to be taken for granted.
What’s something most people at work might not know about you?
I’m fluent in Bengali and can read and write Arabic. Away from my day job, I have recently started making my own jewellery after completing a jewellery making course, and am currently crafting my first necklace!
What’s the most unusual thing that has happened to you in your career?
Years ago, my heel got stuck in the ridges of an escalator at Nottingham court and security had to intervene and do an emergency stop! The other parties were doing their best to pretend they couldn’t see what was happening whilst security yanked my heel free! It put me off those heels for life. Unusual? Perhaps not, but definitely memorable!
