Shared Insights safeguarding forum: Focus on self-neglect

17 June 2025
Online

In this session, we’ll delve into the challenging issue of self-neglect within health and social care settings, using compassionate intervention strategies.

We’ll focus upon safeguarding concerns that can arise from a patient’s lack of self-care and provide some practical advice on how to sensitively handle these situations. We’ll explore how to assess an individual’s mental capacity to make decisions regarding their care, support, personal items and belongings. We’ll discuss the importance of collaborative and clear decision making and the ways that practitioners can ensure they are robustly recording the interventions and support offered. Additionally, we’ll look at the potential issues a coroner may investigate if a death results from self-neglect or hoarding.

This session will be chaired by Julia Catherall, Principal Associate at Browne Jacobson, and she will be joined by Mark Barnett, Partner. Julia and Mark are delighted to welcome the following additional speakers:

  • Adam Fullwood, Barrister at 39 Essex Chambers specialising in mental health and capacity law. Adam also sits as an Assistant Coroner.
  • Nicki Lovelock, Practice Supervisor and Jacqueline Moyo, Social Worker, both within the Adult Social Care Team at Oxfordshire County Council.

With their extensive experience in handling self-neglect and hoarding cases, Nicki, Jacqueline and Adam will all share valuable insights and best practice tips.

This interactive session will also provide delegates with the opportunity to contribute their perspectives, experiences and pose questions to all speakers, fostering a comprehensive discussion on this critical topic.

This event is for in house legal teams, senior leaders, clinicians and professionals working in the health and care sector.
