NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group

[00:00:22] John:

"The program involves 13 different hospital departments across three of the hospitals in the Liverpool City Region. So that's the Royal Hospital, Aintree and Broadgreen. And each week the students go to a different department, which means they get to see 13 different areas of clinical practice across a 13-week period. I think that's an unrivalled experience for them, to see what careers in those departments look like."

[00:00:47] Annette:

"Everybody thinks it's doctors and nurses and there's 350 different job roles within the NHS so it's helping young people especially to understand the different roles that we do have available."

[00:01:00] John:

"I think a lot of students just don't get work experience or if they do, they only get it because they've got a family network, friends of the family but for a lot of our students and for a lot of students nationally they just don't have that family network, they don't have dietitians, physiotherapists, nurses within the family who can offer them those work experience placements. There's a phrase that gets bandied around a lot at the moment, but I think it's quite a true phrase. If you can't see it, you can't be it. So, our aim is to make sure that the students can see it."

[00:01:32] Annette:

"When somebody gets a job with us by coming on one of our programmes, it's fantastic. It's absolutely amazing feeling to know that you've supported someone, especially somebody maybe from a deprived area who thought that they could never work in the NHS. But the students need to realise they've done it themselves. We've just given them opportunities and that support to get them into employment."

[00:01:58] Ben:

"So, over the five years of working here I've supported over 114 learners into full-time paid employment. Prime example is a young person who works over in the Royal. He was sleeping in his car, and I thought well that's not right, he needs a bit of help here. Supported him with getting into some living arrangements and then supported him into paid employment. And from him gaining the employment, he's just excelled and shone."

[00:02:26] Charlotte:

"There's no other programme like it; we won't be able to get work experience like this anywhere else. It's so unique. It's just such an amazing programme with the fact that we can go and experience theatres and clinical education. I personally have been into A&E, and I've been able to see first-hand what it's like to work in there. You get so many life skills from it, it's not even just about medicine, I'd say as a person, I've grown more confident and I can go up and speak to anyone in the hospital now. Like who I've been to in the department has just been so nice and so lovely and they just really want to help you, and they want to give you the best experience possible."

[00:03:02] Leland:

"Going through the cadette programme was great, allowed me to explore what you see on a ward and what different type of roles there are on a ward. The different types of equipment that we use in the NHS, it really helped me see what I wanted to be in the future, from being in healthcare to a nurse. I know the different ways that I can progress now in my career. I'd say definitely just go for it. It's a great opportunity. You do two years with the placement, so you get to go to different wards for first year and second year, so you can find your speciality."

[00:03:33] Ben:

"So, working closely with our communities to offer students opportunities, working closely with partners NHS trusts and also putting out on hospital websites all the programmes that we provide here."

[00:03:47] Annette:

"Our programmes are really beneficial to the students and people that come on our programmes and what we found with other NHS trusts that they don't have the dedicated team that we have in our organisation. So, we have shared our success and our work with other organisations and brought them on board, so they have the same success, and same people are able to come and work in their organisations using our programmes."

[00:04:13] Ed:

"What the team at UHL Group has built is a genuine blueprint for how organisations like the NHS can invest in their communities. It demonstrates what's possible when ambition and collaboration come together.

[00:04:26] Ben:

Knowing that when I'm coming to work, I am making a change, I'm making a difference, providing learners for the next generation, the next workforce, the NHS of the future."

[00:04:37] Annette:

"I was so proud when we was, awarded the work experience gold standard. It just shows the impact that we are having. It's a big thank you to our staff in the wards, in departments who do support our programmes. If we didn't have them, we couldn't do these programmes. If you are an NHS Trust or employer, we're very collaborative and happy to share, so please get in touch."
