Artificial intelligence (AI) law will affect all aspects of human activity. Some of its effects will fundamentally change important aspects of our lives. AI's huge potential and power will provide significant opportunities, and raises complex legal and ethical problems.
Our AI lawyers are helping pioneers solve these issues in a range of industries including tech, health and insurance sectors.
Our multidisciplinary team of AI law tech experts has the experience and expertise to help you use AI including:
- Guiding clients through the UK regulatory pathway created by MHRA.
- Supporting clients who work internationally to bench mark different approaches for AI authorisation.
- Advising on data flows, with particular expertise in special category data and the implication of Schrems II for international transfers. More recently this has also included advising on EU legislation, including potential implications of the draft EC AI Liability Directive and the EU AI Act.
- Advising clients on first and third party claims arising out of the use of systems integrated with AI.
- Advising clients on potential insurance policy coverage issues when insuring the use of AI technology.

What we do
Using AI to make decisions based on information that relates to an identifiable living person, or using such information to train AI, raises issues around data protection law. Navigating the complexities of data protection laws in the context of AI can be challenging.
Our AI lawyers help you ensure you are compliant with data privacy law whilst leveraging AI’s capabilities, and advise you on data governance legal issues.
Tech transactions increasingly involve AI, and we can help you navigate the legal issues. We have significant experience of advising and guiding clients through complex digital disruption challenges.
We know how to build contractual frameworks that futureproof you against AI legislative developments that are on the horizon. We can work with you to build a risk management system.
We can ensure that your agreements have appropriate warranties and safeguards so that you get the technology needed to take your business forward.
All regulated industries are seeing an evolving landscape of AI guidance and regulation which is continuing to adapt as technology moves forward.
We have extensive experience of working with and for regulators and can help your business through the unique challenges raised by AI, both in the UK and in the EU.
Intellectual property law is having to adapt and be adjusted to new challenges posed by AI. Our AI experts can help you navigate through this evolving landscape.
Our IP lawyers are experienced in advising a wide range of clients on IP issues relating to AI including copyright exemptions, such as text and data mining, innovation capture, licensing and infringement.
Our award winning insurance team is helping insurers deal with unique opportunities and changes afforded by AI.
We assist clients with AI technology associated risks, such as insurance policy wordings, identify potential insurance coverage issues and the impact of ‘silent AI’ and advise on first and third party claims.

Frequently asked questions
AI law is a newly established field that deals with legal issues related to artificial intelligence. It addresses ethical concerns regarding the development and use of AI, with a focus on data privacy, ensuring justice in AI decisions and determining accountability in case of any problems. Lawyers practising in this area help companies navigate these complexities to ensure they use AI in a responsible and lawful way.
The legal landscape surrounding AI is complex. Data privacy laws find it difficult to control how AI handles personal information. AI strives for impartiality, but skewed training data may distort its judgments. This gives rise to worries that AI could be used to support injustice in the future. To address these issues, legal frameworks are being established to assign responsibility if an AI causes harm.
Governments are creating regulations to guarantee AI's secure and ethical development. In March 2023, the UK Government published a white paper that promotes a pro-innovation approach to AI regulations. This paper highlights the importance of technologically secure AI systems that are accountable to government regulations, transparent, and publish descriptions within their domains. AI regulators must ensure that these criteria are met to guarantee AI's safe and ethical development.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has made significant progress in recent years, but it still has limitations when it comes to providing legal advice. Legal issues are often complex and involve unique situations that require a personalised approach. Since AI lacks the judgement and critical thinking skills necessary to provide reliable legal guidance, it is recommended to seek the advice of a qualified lawyer for trustworthy legal advice.

Every AI will have its own terms of use. DALL·E 2’s Terms of Use dated 3 November 2022 specify that as between a user and Open AI, a user owns their prompts and uploads. Open AI also assigns to the user all rights in any images generated by DALL·E 2 for that user (subject to the user complying with those Terms of Use, and to a licence to use inputs and output to develop and improve the services).
