Shared Insights: Coroner's question time – focus on 'The Hillsborough Law'
The Hillsborough Law Bill (formally the Public Office (Accountability) Bill) is set to reshape how public authorities engage with inquiries, inquests and investigations.
The Bill covers all public authories and their workforce, including agency staff, and will include the NHS, schools, police and local authorities. The duty will also extend to independent healthcare organisations providing care under NHS contracts. At its core: a new legal duty of candour and assistance backed by criminal sanctions for non-compliance. The Bill also aims to level the playing field at inquests by expanding non means tested legal aid for bereaved families where a public authority is an interested person.
