Shared Insights: What the National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation means for you – and what to do next

The National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation represents one of the most significant moments in the history of maternity safety in this country. Its recommendations, published on 30 June, are far-reaching.

They touch on how we listen to women and families, how we investigate when things go wrong, how we lead organisations, how we educate and support our workforce, and how we address the deep inequalities that continue to affect outcomes and experiences.

In this special extended edition, we heard legal, patient and clinician perspectives and discussed a range of issues including the importance of:

Listening to patients and facilitating family engagement at the right time and in the right way.
Shared decision making and informed consent.
Antenatal education.
Effective use of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) and staff experiences.
A Just and Learning culture.
Systemic implementation of recommendations and prioritising actions in the context of recommendation overwhelm,
Effective leadership, board accountability and rebuilding trust in the system.
