Shared Insights: Confidentiality - Legal principles governing third-party disclosure requests in the health and care sector

09 June 2026

Chaired by Partner Andrew Hopkin and Principal Associate, Julia Catherall, this practical session will explain the legal framework that applies to third party requests for disclosure of confidential records and information in health and care settings.

We will discuss the key principles to apply when making decisions about sharing information with third-parties such as the police.

Our panel of leading experts will share their knowledge of the legal frameworks surrounding confidentiality and disclosure and provide their insights and practical tips for professionals when dealing with third party requests:

  • George Fernie, Chair of the UK Caldicott Guardian Council.
  • Helen Dyer, Vice Chair of the UK Caldicott Guardian Council.
  • Mark Bolt, Mental Health Liaison Officer at Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and previously Superintendent in the Cornwall police force.

Delegates will have the opportunity to put questions to the speakers to gain their perspectives on the issues and to discuss challenges and best practice with organisations across the health and care sector.

This event is free of charge and tailored for in-house legal teams, patient safety specialists, senior leaders, clinicians and professionals working in the health sector.
