Lydia Michaelson-Yeates has recently contributed to an article by Fariha Choudhury on behalf of the National Governance Association (NGA) about multi academy trust (MAT) growth. Here are some of her top tips, advice and some of the views she shared.
MAT growth is a topic I'm passionate about, having supported numerous trusts through mergers and expansions over the years.
What strikes me is how the landscape has shifted. Growth isn't being driven by government pressure anymore – trusts are proactively pursuing consolidation because they genuinely believe it serves their pupils and communities better.
The benefits of growth
The benefits I've seen firsthand are compelling. Trusts that expand strategically can strengthen central teams, share resources more effectively and create better professional development pathways for staff. Ultimately, this means more capacity and expertise reaching classrooms – where it matters most.
But growth must be purposeful. The most successful mergers I've worked on share common characteristics, from day one:
- A clear strategic vision.
- Aligned culture and educational values.
- Robust governance structures.
Before any merger discussions begin, I always advise boards to ask themselves some fundamental questions:
- What's driving this decision?
- Does the potential partner share your culture and values?
- Do you have the capacity to integrate new schools successfully?
The advantages of scaling-up
Scale brings tangible advantages – greater financial resilience, enhanced school improvement capacity and the ability to share expertise across a larger network. However, these benefits only materialise when growth is carefully considered.
If your trust is considering a merger, my advice is simple:
- Engage your professional advisers early.
- Establish clear decision-making processes.
- Don't rush!
The due diligence phase is crucial for identifying potential challenges before they become problems.
Thoughtful MAT growth isn't about numbers – it's about purpose, capacity and lasting impact for the communities you serve.
