‘A New Nuclear Future’ report launch: Legal comment

05 August 2026

A new report, ‘A New Nuclear Future’, has been published by Great South West, in partnership with SEC Newgate UK, Hinkley Point C, Nuclear South West and Equilibrion, on the UK's next phase of nuclear deployment.

The report shares that the next phase should start with the regions already equipped to deliver, particularly the South West.

The South West is already one of the UK's most significant nuclear regions, supporting over 30,000 jobs and offering full-lifecycle expertise from Hinkley Point C to HMNB Devonport and legacy sites such as Winfrith. The report warned, however, that without a clear pipeline of future projects, this hard-won workforce and supply chain risk dispersing as skilled people and SMEs seek opportunities elsewhere.

Zoe Stollard, Partner at Browne Jacobson, Chair of the Nuclear Professional Services Group (PSG) and a board member of Nuclear South West, commented:

“The South West has spent decades building the skills, sites and supply chains the UK now needs for its next generation of nuclear projects. It’s really important to make sure that expertise isn't lost by securing a clear pipeline of work so we can keep delivering nuclear and other major infrastructure projects for years to come."

"From a legal perspective, a huge amount has been learnt on project and contract strategy, risk allocation and management of complex interfaces between parties, and that experience spans legal, technical and commercial disciplines. Retaining a pipeline of work means we can carry that learning forward, applying tried and tested approaches rather than reinventing them on every project, which benefits cost, schedule and delivery certainty across future nuclear and wider infrastructure programmes.

“The clear ambition from Westminster is to retain this expertise and carry it forward into further nuclear and other major infrastructure projects in the years ahead.”
