Summer vacation scheme

If you're looking to get a head start on your legal career, our summer vacation scheme gives you the opportunity to experience life and work at Browne Jacobson.

We offer around 10 places on our summer vacation scheme across all of our offices, which takes place in the last two weeks of June. You will be given the opportunity to undertake real work as well as learn more about the legal departments and the firm through interaction with our people. During the scheme, candidates will have their performance assessed for a training contract.

Your placement will be in one of our legal teams where you will work on a range of tasks, and throughout your time with us, you will be supported by a supervisor and your performance will be reviewed with you and feedback given. As well as spending time with a legal team, the two weeks will also include:

  • training and development activities and a project to help you build/develop your skills
  • opportunities to speak to our trainee solicitors, managing partner, lawyers etc.
  • talks from our departments so you can find out more about the firm, the work we do and our clients

You will also be provided with financial assistance (£250 per week) to help with travel and/or accommodation costs.

The application process includes an online application form and online assessments (deductive and inductive reasoning). Should you be successful through that stage you will be invited to a telephone interview (usually lasts around 15 minutes) so we can find out more about your skills and experience. The final stage is an assessment centre which will comprise of a range of different activities which generally include; a case study, group activity, written exercise and interview.

Throughout the selection and assessment process, we will be looking for a range of attributes which typically include:

  • commitment, ambition and enthusiasm for law - we want to know that you are serious about your career in law
  • practical approach - our clients want a common sense and commercial approach when solving their legal and business problems
  • commercial awareness - are you aware of what is happening in the business world?
  • willingness to accept responsibility – as a trainee, you’ll be managing your own time and handling your own cases so we need to know that you’re up for the job
  • teamwork - we want you to be able to use your own initiative and have the ability to work in a team
  • resilience – do you have the resilience to adapt to setbacks?
  • drive - we look for people who get things done
