UK and Ireland law firm Browne Jacobson has achieved a double triumph at the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Europe 2025 awards, with Partner Tim Johnson winning the individual prize while the firm secured a place in the overall rankings.
The firm was ranked 33rd most innovative law firm in Europe, an outstanding achievement that demonstrates its exceptional capability to drive meaningful change through legal innovation. This ranking reflects the firm's commitment to being at the forefront of society's biggest issues and its ability to deliver solutions that benefit clients, consumers and society.
Recognition of firm-wide innovation culture
The dual recognition at the FT awards reflects Browne Jacobson's broader commitment to innovation across all practice areas. The firm's 33rd place European ranking demonstrates how its culture of combining legal excellence with technological advancement and social impact creates value for major corporate clients seeking forward-thinking legal partners.
Richard Medd, Managing Partner at the firm, said: "This recognition validates our approach of putting innovation at the heart of everything we do.
“For businesses seeking legal partners who drive change rather than simply react to it, these awards provide compelling evidence of our firm’s capabilities. We consistently demonstrate how legal excellence combined with innovation can tackle complex challenges, while delivering positive social impact.”
Interesting, new and unique innovation
Tim Johnson was named winner of the individual FT Innovative Lawyers Europe 2025 award for his pioneering work in championing understandable policy documents. Tim's win demonstrates the innovative culture that has propelled Browne Jacobson to its impressive European ranking.
Tim Johnson's victory came from his pioneering work transforming insurance policies into documents everybody can understand. His innovative approach, combining University of Nottingham linguistics research with artificial intelligence, revealed 80% of Britons couldn't comprehend standard insurance policies.
The FT Innovative Lawyers awards recognise individuals and firms whose work makes a significant mark where law, business and society intersect. The work fundamentally changes how the industry communicates with consumers. The Browne Jacobson team has now advised around 30 insurers with over 7 million customers combined on their policy wordings since the FCA's new consumer duty obligations came into effect in 2023.
Tim Johnson, Partner and Insurance Sector Lead, said: "This work perfectly embodies Browne Jacobson's philosophy of using legal expertise to solve real-world problems. This recognition validates the firm’s commitment to making legal services more accessible and client-focused. It's incredible to be recognised alongside other outstanding individuals in the profession."
One of the judges commented: “Loads of people try to do legal design - but this was interesting, new and unique.”
