Monthly insurance policy wording update

Insurance Insights: The Word, January 2026

29 January 2026

Happy new year. For our January edition of The Word we cover a range of topics of interest from across the insurance sector.

We examine how climate risks are accelerating faster than insurers' models anticipated, with actuaries warning that extreme weather events could strain reinsurance capacity and widen the protection gap sooner than expected. Following the FCA's response to Which?'s super-complaint, we explore the regulator's demand for clearer policy wordings in travel and home insurance, shifting focus from technical compliance to genuine consumer understanding. We also explore the FCA's separate push for simplified policy wordings in travel and home insurance, shifting focus from technical compliance to genuine consumer understanding.

We also consider the implications for insurers following the government's retreat from audit reform, originally prompted by the Carillion collapse, and what this means for professional indemnity and trade credit exposures. In our continued exploration of AI, we analyse how algorithmic bias could widen the insurance gap, potentially leaving vulnerable populations further marginalised from essential cover. Finally, we look at the implications of Coady v Coady for professional indemnity insurers, as a wave of challenges to improperly executed "lockdown wills" begins to emerge.

We hope you find this edition informative and insightful.
