Food for Thought: Food and drink regulatory update: Autumn 2025

14 October 2025

We are pleased to share the Autumn edition of our quarterly regulatory update, prepared by our specialist food and drink team.

There has been a lot going on around 'less healthy food' (LHF) restrictions over the last few months and you'd be forgiven for losing track.

Our first article this month looks at the existing TV and non-broadcast advertising restrictions for foods classed as 'high in fat, salt or sugar' (HFSS) and what businesses, brands and agencies need to know in relation to the new restrictions on HFSS that are classified as LHF in the run up to 5 January 2026.

This edition also includes:

  • Brexit reset: UK-EU SPS agreement breakthrough: September 2025 update
  • High caffeine energy drinks ban: Government consultation on child protection measures
  • CBD and novel foods regulation: A watershed moment
  • Nutrition and health claims (NHCRs) refresher
  • FSA Market Authorisation Innovation and Research Programme: Streamlining food safety approvals

You can also read all the latest food law news from leading international experts following our team's attendance at the European Food Law Association (EFLA) Congress in Milan.

If you missed our City AM Opinion piece on the return of alcopops, do reach out to Rachel Lyne or Katharine Mason directly for their insights on drinks regulation.
