Data protection

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals. It is fair to say that the ICO has never been busier. In 2012, twelve local authorities were fined a combined total of £1.2 million for data protection breaches.

Working in or with the public sector, and routinely handling really sensitive personal data, means that you must have robust processes, policies and protocols to minimise the risk of a data protection breach. With eye-watering financial penalties and the risk of disastrous damage to reputation, are you confident that your systems and processes would withstand the consequences of a breach?

We provide a package of services for supporting data protection managers. Our DPA breach support services minimise the risk of a data protection breach. This product is aimed at in house teams or data protection managers who need support in handling a data protection or information security breach.

We will:

  • Provide a second opinion on proposed actions
  • Provide you with a 'sanity' check on any decision to notify
  • Advise as to how best to present any referral to the ICO
  • Suggest next steps that should be offered to the ICO to minimise or avoid any fine or sanction
  • Identify the key policies and procedures you may need to review
  • Advise on possible claims
  • Complete our work in a two day turnaround, plus 24 hour lawyer availability for telephone support.
