Election outcome - Conservative NHS plans?

13 December 2019

The results are in and we now know that the next Government will be a Tory majority one. The NHS was one of the most prominent aspects of the election campaigns and, on the basis of the Tory manifesto, we can now plan on the basis of:

  • Legislative change to enact NHSE/I’s proposals, with the aim being to “enshrine in law our fully-funded, long term NHS plan”;
  • Increased funding for the NHS, increasing by 29% over the period 2018-2023;
  • The new hospitals infrastructure programme, with “40 new hospitals to be build and funded over the next 10 years”;
  • The NHS People Plan: more nurses, doctors and primary care professionals; and an NHS visa;
  • Increased funding for mental health, social care and community care for those with learning disabilities and autism….

… and, most immediately,

  • Brexit: the UK’s exit from the EU in January 2020, with a deal and transitional period.

We will be providing more detailed analysis of the impact of the election results for the NHS next week but if you would like to discuss the outcome in the meantime, please contact Rachel Whitaker or Charlotte Harpin.
