
Data Protection Officer Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes
Our three Data Protection Officer (DPO) continuous development programmes provides school and trust DPOs with all they need to keep their knowledge up to date throughout the academic year.
Delivered through bite-sized sessions which allow time for your learning to embed, each course includes breakout sessions and discussions to provides the opportunity for you to networking with fellow DPOs. They’ll also be plenty of time for all of your questions to be answered.
All three courses are led by education lawyer and data protection expert Dai Durbridge. Dai has extensive experience advising schools and trusts on all things data protection, including complex breaches and subject access requests.
Course options
Following on from our popular and highly regarded DPO continuous development intermediate programme, this advanced course builds on that strong learning platform and focuses in greater depth on the key issues, supporting you with building your confidence, reducing resource need and limiting or removing the need for external legal spend.
Running over five months, this course is again delivered remotely via Zoom and covers:

This initial course offers a strong foundation in data protection law, practice and the expectations of the Information Commissioner’s Office, supporting you with building your confidence to undertake your DPO role.
Running over four months, delegates will learn and work together in sessions hosted on Zoom. Topic covered include:
- Understanding the role of the DPO
- The legal foundation stones – data protection principles and the lawful bases for processing
- Rights of the data subject
- Managing subject access requests
- Dealing with data breaches in your school or trust
- Evidencing compliance through policy, practice and training
- Using consent correctly

As with our other DPO courses, this intermediate course enables delegates to learn remotely with two-hour modules delivered via Zoom. The interactive and engaging course and will cover:
- Managing subject access requests and redaction
- Using CCTV compliantly and dealing with requests for footage
- Revisiting lawful processing
- Obtaining, recording and managing consent including for biometric data
- Data minimisation - retention and destruction of personal data, retaining emails
- Handling complex data breaches
- Police requests for access to data
- Sharing data safely and securely
- Learning from recent data breaches and the official Information Commissioners Office advice
- Outcomes focused staff training
- Completing, using and improving Data Protection Impact Assessments
- Reporting to the board
- Exemplar best practice

Who should attend?
All three courses are suitable for Data Protection Officers within maintained schools, independent schools and academy trust settings.
Which course is right for me?
This depends on your level of experience:
- The foundation course is designed for new DPOs who have had little or no formal training and who need to understand the basics in order to establish a good foundation for their DPO duties.
- The intermediate course is aimed at more experienced DPOs who understand the topics covered in the foundation course and who would benefit from understanding more of the detail in order to focus data protection governance and management.
- The advanced course is for experienced DPOs who’s role requires them to focus on complex issues around breach, cyber risk, subject access requests and culture change as part of their ongoing data protection training and updating.
