Browne Jacobson’s national Head of Education, Mark Blois, has recently been designated as a National Leader of Governance by the Department of Education (DfE).
The DfE is responsible for designating National Leaders of Education (NLEs) and National Leaders of Governance (NLGs). Both roles are responsible for making important contributions to school and trust-system improvement.
NLEs are outstanding headteachers who use their skills and experience to support schools in challenging circumstances. NLGs are individuals with high levels of experience of governance who will provide targeted support to schools and trusts with governance challenges including through providing governance expertise, external reviews of governance and bespoke support. The importance of the effectiveness of governance in the context of sustained school improvement has been an increasingly high profile issue in the schools and academies sector.
Mark, who has recently completed 10 years as the Chair of a large multi academy trust, was originally designated as an NLG between 2015 and 2021. However, the DfE has recently reformed the NLG programme and significantly reduced the number of NLGs nationally through a robust application and assessment process.
Those experienced governors, trustees, governance professionals and governance consultants who have now been designated as NLGs by the DfE are considered to have demonstrated the substantial governance experience and expertise needed to carry out the role of NLG to a high standard.
Mark’s status as an NLG reflects the skills, experience and credibility he has developed through his long-standing dedication to education governance, and alongside his NLG colleagues, Mark will now play an important role in supporting the quality of governance in schools and trusts.
