Unravelling the challenges and opportunities in UK sports governance

What are the barriers for good sports club governance?

18 April 2024

1. Limited resources

Clubs, particularly at the grass roots, often face financial constraints making it challenging to allocate resources to governance practices.

2. Volunteer capacity

Reliance on volunteers may lead to limited time and expertise available for governance tasks. There can often be a resistance to get involved and take on more administrative burden that takes the volunteer away from the sport itself.

3. Awareness and training

Volunteers may lack awareness and training on governance standards, hindering effective implementation.
