Nalin spoke passionately about the role that modern libraries could play. In Europe, they are thriving community hubs and he feels they could be here. Libraries offer vital resources for people who may not otherwise have them, such as internet access or group working spaces for school children.
Jessi gave an example from Tunbridge Wells, where space next to the town hall had been repurposed for public meetings for hosting events such as children’s reading, and parent and baby groups.
Using public space in this way can give a positive message to give to a community. Julian felt it was not always so easy to get that message across and referenced an example in Watford, where stakeholders had been unable to see the benefit of a synergy between the local museum and library when this was suggested.
