Law firm offsets carbon footprint to help finance Brazilian rainforest project

Browne Jacobson is certified as a carbon neutral company status after it offset its carbon footprint to help support a major environmental project in Brazil as part of its ongoing commitment to the environment and the reduction of greenhouse gases.

Browne Jacobson’s ‘Clean CO2’ certification was achieved after the firm carried out an audit of its carbon footprint and then worked with global sustainability consultancy Anthesis to find an effective way to offset and reduce its footprint going forwards.

The 565 tonnes of CO2 emissions the firm had generated during 2019 has been offset by financing the CIKEL Brazilian Amazon REDD APD Project.

The CIKEL Project is located in Para State, Brazil, where 63% of the Amazon rainforest has already been lost. By using sustainable logging practices, CIKEL will help to avoid the deforestation of over 27,000 hectares of rainforest. The CIKEL Project also aims to support sustainable social development through local job creation and training and education workshops as well as improving biodiversity monitoring in the area.

In addition to supporting carbon offsetting projects Browne Jacobson has introduced a number of measures across its five UK offices over the last few years to help reduce its carbon footprint including installing sensor lighting in all its main offices, introducing a recycling scheme for all waste including printer toners, stationery and food, a used battery collection initiative, Ride2work and Season Ticket Loan schemes and promoting greater flexible and remote working.

Richard Medd, managing partner at Browne Jacobson, said:

“Achieving carbon neutral status demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and creating a low-emissions, climate resilient future.

“This is the first year we have offset our carbon footprint to help important carbon reduction projects around the world. It has been a long term goal of ours and marks an important milestone in our journey.

“As a business we recognise that we are at the early stages of that journey and achieving this certification is just one element of a bigger strategy to become more sustainable as a business and create a low-emissions, climate resilient future.”

Anthesis works with organisations from major blue chip corporations to early stage companies around the world to help them achieve their environmental goals and ambitions.
