From absence to attendance: Practical solutions for schools
Join our education law specialists for a practical session covering what your ABIE means, what the updated attendance guidance requires and how to prepare your policies, data and governance for the scrutiny ahead.
Absence across all schools reached 6.93% in 2025/26. Nearly one in five pupils missed at least 10% of school. The government's response has been to make it personal. Every mainstream state school in England now has its own Attendance Baseline Improvement Expectation (ABIE), an individual target calibrated against similar schools and monitored by the DfE. Schools that fall short will hear from the DfE directly.
The updated Working Together to Improve School Attendance guidance tightens expectations on register timing, medical evidence and SEND provision. Ofsted's new attendance and behaviour judgement takes effect this term, with inspectors examining attendance by pupil group and testing whether governors and trustees are exercising genuine oversight.
Who should attend?
This session is free to attend and open to all. It has been designed to support school and trust leaders, particularly school attendance champions, headteachers and SENCOs.
