DPO foundation CPD course, 2026-27 academic year
This initial course offers a strong foundation in data protection law, practice and the expectations of the Information Commissioner’s Office, supporting you with building your confidence to undertake your DPO role.
Delivered remotely via Zoom, delegates will experience ‘bite-sized’ two-hour learning sessions interspersed with one-hour reflection and Q&A sessions to embed learning, ensure all your questions are answered and concerns discussed, and provide the opportunity for you to network with fellow DPOs.
The DPO foundation course is led by education lawyer and data protection expert Dai Durbridge, who has extensive experience advising schools and trusts on all things data protection, including complex breaches, subject access requests and cyber attacks.
Course programme
Running over five months, delegates will learn and work together in sessions hosted on Zoom. Topic covered include:
- Understanding the role of the DPO
- The legal foundation stones – data protection principles and the lawful bases for processing
- Rights of the data subject
- Managing subject access requests
- Dealing with data breaches in your school or trust
- Evidencing compliance through policy, practice and training
- Using consent correctly
- Changing culture to succeed in your role
The course provides eight two-hour learning sessions and three one-hour Q&A sessions for delegates to have their questions answered and issues discussed to ensure a personalised learning experience.
Who should attend?
This course is designed for new or inexperienced DPOs within maintained schools, independent schools and academy trust settings, who have had little or no formal training and who need to understand the basics in order to establish a good foundation for their DPO duties.
Cost
Each course costs £825 plus VAT per delegate.
Spaces are limited to approximately 30 delegates per cohort.
