The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 training

The introduction of the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 changes the landscape for how schools and trusts should manage their data protection responsibilities.

This targeted training course, led by Dai Durbridge, Claire Archibald and Beth Paliga and delivered in two interactive Zoom sessions, is specifically designed to equip Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in schools and trusts with the knowledge and practical skills needed to navigate these new requirements.

The Act changes how you should manage subject access requests, introduces a requirement to implement a complaints process specifically for data protection issues, impacts on how police should request data from you, introduces the new concept of ‘recognised legitimate interest’, and more.

By attending this interactive course, you will learn about the changes and their impact and understand how best to implement them in your setting, including changes to policies, procedures, practice and your data protection compliance culture. The course includes polls, case studies, breakout sessions and plenty of time for questions and answers.

Course outline

Delivered live online, delegates will experience two interactive two-and-a-half learning sessions (five hours in total) that cover:

Session one:

• The new SARs landscape: stopping the clock, a reasonable and proportionate search, strategy for managing requests.
• Understanding the changes to the Public Task lawful basis.
• Recognised Legitimate Interest and what it means for you.
• The new approach to managing police requests for personal data.

Session two:

• Devising a compliant data protection complaints process.
• Getting ready for the changes to the PECR regulations.
• Managing the growing use of pupil personal data in research.
• The growing trend of international data transfers.
• Conclusion and actions.
