Browne Jacobson welcomes new partner to its Birmingham health practice

13 June 2016
Simon Charlton

Browne Jacobson has strengthened its health offering in Birmingham with the appointment of partner Simon Charlton.

Simon joins the firm from Weightmans LLP where he was an associate overseeing the development of the firm’s healthcare advisory service.

With over 22 years’ experience as a practising solicitor, Simon has worked with a wide range of NHS organisations, the National Health Service Litigation Authority (NHSLA) and the private sector. He has acted on high profile medico legal matters at Board level, advising on complex governance issues, information governance, regulatory matters, confidentiality and injunctions and has represented clients at inquests. Since 2012 he has also acted as Assistant Coroner for Coventry and Warwickshire. Prior to his role at Weightmans, Simon spent nine years at Bevan Brittan, in both the Bristol and Birmingham offices, where he specialised in healthcare, clinical negligence and personal injury work.

Simon joins the firm’s flagship health and social care team who act for more than 50 NHS bodies including NHS England, 150 local authorities, and major independent sector providers, alongside the largest healthcare inquests team in the country and a large clinical negligence practice acting for the NHS Litigation Authority and the Medical Protection Society. Highly rated by leading independent legal directories Chambers & Partners and Legal 500, the team is widely acknowledged to have one of the country’s leading health and social care practices, with particular expertise in Court of Protection, especially deprivation of liberty, and general advisory matters.

Ben Troke, who heads up the firm’s health and social care advisory team, said:
“We are delighted that Simon is joining our growing team in Birmingham. He is a first class lawyer and his broad legal experience of working with various NHS bodies, local authorities and the private sector.  Simon will be a real benefit to the firm and will be significant in supporting the needs of our health and social care clients in the West Midlands and nationally.”

Simon added:
“I am very excited to be joining Browne Jacobson. They have an excellent reputation as legal experts in a very competitive marketplace, extensive sector knowledge and the highest standards of quality client service.”

This latest senior appointment takes their partner head count to 110 and follows on from a successful year for the law firm which saw it enter the top 50 UK law firm rankings for the first time, named ‘Best Managed National Firm’ at the 2015 Managing Partners’ Forum (MPF) Awards and more recently post a record turnover of £64.3m for 2015/16.
