Understanding re-brokerage for academies webinar

10 October 2017

Re-brokering is the terminology the DfE use where they require the transfer of an academy to a new trust (as opposed to a voluntary transfer).

Increasingly, academy trusts are being required by their Regional Schools Commissioner to transfer one, or more of their academies to another academy trust as part of a re-brokerage arrangement, whilst other academy trusts are being asked to receive a re-brokered academy.

In this webinar, Hayley and Katie will explore re-brokerage arrangements including the Regional School Commissioners’ legal powers and the circumstances in which an academy may be at risk of being re-brokered, as well as the potential consequences of refusing to consent to such an arrangement. They will also look at this topic from the perspective of a trust being asked to accept a re-brokered academy and give an overview of the legal process that this entails.

This live webinar is designed to:

  • give you a greater understanding of re-brokerage arrangements and the associated legal powers
  • help you identify when an academy may be at risk of re-brokerage, and
  • create awareness of what steps to take should this become relevant to you, both in terms of transferring academies out of, or welcoming academies into, your trust.

Understanding the Appropriate Adult expectation

One of three significant changes to Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022 is a new expectation that Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) should be aware of the requirement for children to have an Appropriate Adult. The guidance says nothing more than that, but the DfE has updated the Searching, Screening and Confiscation Advice to include a new section on strip searches. In this briefing I explain how to meet this new requirement and help you understand what steps you need to take when involving the police in pupil searches.
