Coasting schools consultation

We have co-written this guidance with the Association of School and College Leaders. It is relevant to senior and system leaders in maintained schools in England and outlines the DfE’s proposed definition of a ‘coasting’ school and details the consultation process. 


Following the Government’s announcement in June 2015 of its intention to increase intervention powers regarding coasting schools, ministers promised to consult on the coasting schools definition before bringing powers into force. This consultation, Intervening in failing, under performing and coasting schools, was launched on 21 October 2015 (link in Further information at the end of this paper). The consultation goes somewhat wider, however, as it also launches draft guidance covering other intervention powers relating to maintained schools. In addition, the consultation document provides some wider explanation of the Education and Adoption Bill’s provisions and aims.
