academies can be coasting too

9 December 2015

The Government has announced that the Education and Adoption Bill will be amended so that the 'coasting school' provisions will apply directly to academies.

The Government had already taken the step of amending its model funding agreement to apply the coasting provisions to academies contractually, but this would have only captured academies operating under the latest version of the funding agreement. The further action of directly applying the legislation to academies should give the Secretary of State the remit to intervene if an academy meets the coasting criteria, although we have yet to see the actual proposed legislative wording.

Many will welcome the Government’s recognition that academies can fall short of the expected standards just as a maintained school can. But this recognition surely also highlights that academy status per se is not a panacea in terms of school improvement and therefore calls into question other parts of the Bill.
