about our education team

We are one of the country’s leading law firms operating in the education sector. From our five regional centres in Birmingham, Exeter, London, Manchester and Nottingham our multi-disciplinary practice delivers a comprehensive portfolio of education law and HR services to a national client base. Where appropriate, we also draw in expertise from across our full-service law firm to assist clients with their bespoke needs – from construction projects, employment issues and funding matters, to protecting commercial intellectual property, health and safety, and disputes.

As one of the largest education teams in the country we are also part of an elite group of law firms ranked in Band One nationally for advising schools by both independent legal directories, Legal 500 and Chambers UK. Our rapidly evolving higher education practice was also ranked in the third tier of the Legal 500 for the first time in 2020.

We have an established client base of over 1,500 organisations of all sizes, including independent and maintained schools, boarding schools, academies and their sponsors, further education colleges, diocesan boards of education, local authorities, regulatory bodies, educational charities, maintained schools, universities and professional associations.

We work in partnership with a number of leading organisations whom we know and trust.

Our accreditations

The latest edition of Legal 500 refers to our ‘exceptional’ team as being ‘uniformly helpful, patient, knowledgeable and personable’ as well as being ‘led exceptionally well‘ by the head of education Mark Blois. They have described the team as ‘impeccable’, ‘timely’ ‘excellent’ and ‘accurate’ as well as praising them for their ‘high standard of knowledge’. Nick MacKenzie was highlighted as ‘impressive’ while Richard Freeth was mentioned for his ‘good customer care skills and legal knowledge’. Julia Green was also mentioned as ‘knowledgeable’ and ‘well informed’.

In Chambers we are recognised as an “industry powerhouse with significant experience in academy sponsorship and free school projects". During the research process, one of our clients commented “They are excellent. Their general advice has been clearly presented, they are approachable and they have been very patient in answering queries. They find a way to make things happen to get you where you want to be.” They also highlighted team head Mark Blois as being “very personable, easy to work with” and someone who “wears his knowledge lightly – he gives good advice and is a good listener” while Nick MacKenzie is “very personable and knows about education“.
