summer vacation scheme - see the firm in its true light

17 July 2018

Having just graduated from a history degree, I was apprehensive, yet excited, about the prospect of spending two weeks in the Social Care department in Insurance and Public Risk, of which I knew little about. I needn’t have worried, as I have had a most wonderful experience.

The team are very supportive, which has allowed my skills and confidence to grow and develop. They provided me with a range of work to give me the full experience in the department, from researching to drafting documents. I completed some form of research every day when I was in the office, which is fortunate as that was one of the favourite elements of my degree. I had never used some of the software before, so it was challenging to get used to at first, but after gaining advice from the research centre, I was able to use it and found it to be indispensable for most of the work that I completed afterwards.

The constant change in case precedents and legislation make the research more interesting, as it meant that cases that looked similar could end completely differently, and vice versa. When work is constantly different, I find myself both challenged and enthusiastic, which made this work extremely enjoyable.

All in all, my experience working in the department reinforced my desire to work in a people orientated area of law, whilst working with cases that are diverse and unique.

The days away were equally outstanding. The day in Birmingham brought with it training that was a good way to reinforce the skills needed to be an effective lawyer, both in your firm and in negotiations. By providing key advice on how to present oneself from their body language to their tone of voice, this session provided skills that will be useful in any law path that we choose to take, which reinforces their commitment to training at all levels.

Similarly, the business game on how to run a law firm, which initially appeared like a complicated version of monopoly, led to all of the groups working as best we could, to ensure that our firm was the most successful and most cost efficient law firm in the room. It was a fantastic exercise that demonstrated the complicated levels of running a business, and a reminder that a law firm is also a business. This reiterates that at all levels of the business, ensuring that the business is working effectively is just as important as customer care, and through completing this game, I believe that it gave us all a greater appreciation to what goes on in the background behind the legal support for our clients.

The visit to Clue HQ, though slightly less legal focused than the others, was absolutely wonderful, and as my first time in an escape room, it was a hilarious afternoon, that saw us make it out with less than ten minutes left. Followed by dinner and drinks with the trainees, this was a relaxed and chilled environment allowed for anecdotes from their time in the firm, with a mixture of serious and hilarious.

Finally, I loved that the scheme allowed us all to visit numerous office sites, as this presented the diversity and outreach of the firm, whilst simultaneously demonstrating that the core values of Browne Jacobson are reinforced in every department and office that you choose to work. It is the core values that are held at the centre of everything, and when a person is brought into the firm, it is because they first of all match these values, and their qualifications and capabilities follow this. We had talks from each department at each office that we visited, which gave me an insight into the different departments and the type of work that they complete, once again displaying the range of work that the firm takes on, and therefore the range of people that work in it.

Overall, the opportunities and experiences that I have had these last two weeks have been fantastic and wide-ranging. Browne Jacobson have created a remarkable scheme that has allowed us to see it the firm in its truest light, which is equally its best.
