Working in the busy education team!

17 December 2012

The Education Team is part of the firm’s Business Services department and is represented in all five of the firm’s offices. As you’d expect, schools are the education team’s main clients and the team assists with the full range of legal issues that they encounter. The work undertaken by trainees is broadly split into three categories: work on school conversions and restructures, contentious and non-contentious advisory work and professional support work.

1. With the academies programme in full swing, helping schools respond to the demands and opportunities that are arising is a key part of the department’s work. The team assists schools seeking academy status and has particular expertise advising schools wishing to enter into collaborative partnerships or other group structures.

2. The team advises on issues related to admissions, admission appeals, exclusions, special educational needs (SEN) and disability, policies and procedures, safeguarding, health and safety and governance issues, to name but a few. Advice is also given in relation to a range of commercial issues affecting schools.

3. The third category involves drafting articles, portal content, guidance documents and training presentations, either at the request of a specific client or for delivery at national conferences. Education is an area in constant flux and the team presents at numerous events throughout the year, providing key legislative and policy updates for the sector.

As a trainee in education, you are given the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the team’s work and the variety means no two days are the same. Education is a key strategic area for the firm. You gain an in-depth understanding of the education sector and of a wide range of areas of legal expertise, and get to know key personnel across the firm.
