Socialising with the firm: the SSC committee

3 May 2011

Whilst you are a trainee at Browne Jacobson there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in various different social and sport groups, depending upon your preference. However, one that gives you a great opportunity to meet people in other teams at all levels from paralegal to partner is the firm’s Sports and Social Committee (otherwise known as the ‘SSC’).

The SSC arrange sport and social events for all members of staff which are paid for or subsidised in large part by the firm. There is an SSC team for both the Nottingham and the Birmingham offices. On moving to the Birmingham office for my second seat, I was given the chance to join the Birmingham SSC.

As soon as I started I got involved straightaway with helping to organise a comedy night for 40 staff at the Birmingham Glee Club; great fun and a good chance to chat to other people in the office (in between acts of course – you don’t want to risk being picked on by the comedian)!

The committee have already planned their schedule of events for next year. The aim is to provide a sufficiently broad spectrum of events so that everyone at the office feels that there is something that appeals to them. This leads to a list of events that range from the traditional end-of-financial-year party, to a trip to Quasar, to a visit to a pantomime or theatre show which staff can bring their family along to.

We are always looking out for new or different events that we think people at the Birmingham office would be interested in going to. Most people on the committee are based in and around Birmingham so between us we have a great deal of contacts in the wider community that keep us posted on upcoming social, sport and charity events.

The Nottingham and Birmingham SSC liaise regularly to ensure that events are arranged which give people from the separate offices a chance to mingle. Particular highlights that the whole firm look forward to are the annual ‘Flit Quiz’ and the Christmas Party.
