What is the Nottinghamshire junior lawyers division?

21 March 2011

This year there are four Browne Jacobson trainees on the Nottinghamshire Junior Lawyers Division Committee (Laura Mackenzie, Will Reynolds, Kassra Powles and myself). The NJLD organises a wide range of events throughout the year including an annual ball, social events, the Hammond Cup (advocacy competition), sporting events, judges shadowing scheme and careers advice.

You can be a member of the NJLD if you are an LPC student, paralegal, trainee solicitor or, qualified solicitor up to 5 years PQE. There are 16 members elected to the committee every November. I am one of the two events secretaries and I am working with Sophie (a trainee at Berryman) to organise various social, networking and careers events this year. So far we have organised a ‘beat the January blues’ social event and a drinks and nibbles event after the first round of the Hammond Cup advocacy competition. This week (week commencing 21 March) we have held a careers event run by a local legal recruitment agency to provide members with an update on the current climate and NQ jobs. I am always nervous at the start of events but I think the careers event went well with about 35 people attending.

I think a lot of people see being on a committee as just a great thing to put on your CV (me included)! However, it is so much more than this. Already NJLD has given me an opportunity to meet and work with people from other law firms, other professionals at a similar level in their career and legal recruiters. I have really enjoyed organising the events although it is a lot of work on top of my training contract. Sometimes our Committee meetings can go on for a long time because – as you can imagine with a room full of lawyers, everyone has a lot to say! That aside I am looking forward to organising and attending the upcoming events, including laser quest and the summer party.
