geographical indications
Running time: 15.18 mins
Geographical Indications (GI's) are forms of
protection for the geographical origin of products. The principle
is well established throughout many countries. Geographical areas
such as Champagne, Parma, Melton Mowbray and Newcastle all have
food products associated with them.
This podcast explores the socio-economic
background and history of GI's, their development as a European
concept, their present manifestation as PGIs and PDOs, the
application process for obtaining a PGI or a PDO and the methods by
which they can be enforced. The podcast concludes by asking
what the future holds for the development of this idiosyncractic
but highly interesting intellectual property right.
