case study - Emily Birkett

reasons why joined:

For my training contract, I was looking for a medium sized commercial law firm in the Midlands and was attracted to Browne Jacobson by the level of training provided and the opportunities available to play an active part and the scope of the work they carry out. I was also particularly interested in the work the firm does in the public sector.

experience gained:

Since starting as a trainee in March 2008 I have completed two seats.

The first being in the social care and education teams, where I assisted in providing legal services to local authorities on a range of legal issues, including those relating to institutional abuse and professional negligence. I also assisted on education matters advising clients on transitions in school status and matters related to Special Educational Needs, admissions and data protection.

My second seat was in the employment team where I have dealt with both contentious and non-contentious employment matters, including contractual issues, unfair dismissal, redundancy and all areas of discrimination.

recent achievements:

  • Supporting counsel on a two day hearing at the Court of Appeal
  • Coordinating and drafting a tender to a local authority
  • Coordinating and filing a petition for leave to appeal at the House of Lords which if accepted means we will have permission to present our appeal to an appeal committee
