Law firm’s ‘ground force’ challenge helps transform two local community projects
16 October 2008
Lawyers and staff from the Birmingham office
of Browne Jacobson put their green credentials to the test this
month when they helped to transform two local community
projects.
The ‘ground force’ style initiative, which saw
employees volunteering a day to give two projects a new lease of
life, is part of the firm’s annual Away Day Community Action
challenge.
The first project saw 24 volunteers tidying up
the grounds at Leighton House, Rednal.
Leighton House is one of two properties owned
by Headway West Midlands which provides services and support to
people with brain injuries and their families. As well as helping
to bring the gardens surrounding Leighton House back to life,
volunteers assisted with the construction of a rockery and the
planting of 500 daffodil bulbs.
A second team of 13 volunteers focused on an
employment support and training centre for women refugees run by
the Community Integration Partnership (CIP) in Edgbaston.
Volunteers spent the day digging and removing weeds, planting bulbs
and sprucing up the Centre’s sensory garden.
Last year staff at Browne Jacobson spent an
afternoon giving an environmental make-over to projects at Edward’s
Trust offices in Edgbaston and the Ackers Trust in Small Heath.
Browne Jacobson’s 9-strong Birmingham office
Community Action Group organises a range of activities for members
of the office to participate in. In addition to the Away Day the
firm participates in the ‘Reading in Schools’ project, Operation
Christmas Child scheme run by Samaritan's Purse and the Prince’s
Trust by providing business mentors to support young people between
the ages of 14-30 keen to start up new businesses.
Jo Bligh, Partner at Browne Jacobson’s
Birmingham Office, said :
“Our annual Away Day is a regular fixture in
the firm’s community action calendar. Working with the
community in this way constitutes a very important part of the
fabric of the firm and once again this year’s event has been a
tremendous success. It gives the whole office an opportunity to
make a real contribution to two very worthwhile causes.”
