City vs region - It's all about work life balance
28 June 2007
The current review by the Law Society investigating why record
numbers of people are leaving the profession could prove extremely
beneficial for regional law firms. The issue of work/life balance
is expected to feature highly as the belief that being a City
lawyer is all about pots of money, expensive cars and holidays and
endless champagne is dispelled.
Instead a bleaker picture of working late
nights and weekends amidst immense pressure resulting in emotional
problems and even breakdowns is emerging. However, as leading
Midlands law firm Browne Jacobson says, it doesn't need to be that
way.
The firm's HR Director, Eileen Henry said:
"it's understandable why lawyers are
attracted to City law firm in the first place, they are high
profile and appear glamorous and exciting but reality often does
not match up to the message.
Recent publicity surrounding trainees and
newly qualified lawyers in the city has again focused attention on
quality of life issues – very high salaries often come at a price
and not everyone wants to sacrifice a social and family life for
their career.
Many regional firms like ours offer a
viable alternative to this treadmill; we can offer high quality
work, flexible working and variety in a more relaxed and supportive
environment."
