Browne Jacobson raises over £3000 for local hospice
28 February 2008
Staff at Nottingham-based law firm Browne Jacobson have dug deep
and raised £3,489 for Nottinghamshire Hospice.
Nottinghamshire Hospice was chosen by the
region’s leading law firm as its Charity of the Year in 2007 and
during the course of the last 12 months staff have staged a number
of fund-raising events including two Charity Book, DVD & CD
sales, Jeans Days, an indoor rowing event and a Grand National
Sweepstake.
Since 1980, some 13,676 patients and their
families have used the services and the Hospice hopes to increase
the number as new services are added. A free Daycare service
is provided for patients whose prognosis is less than two years and
patients can attend one to three days a week dependent upon their
needs. Nottinghamshire Hospice also provides a Hospice at Home
service, offering nursing care over a 24 hour period, 365 days per
year. The service is provided free to patients who are
considered to be in the last six months of their life as deemed by
their clinician.
The cost of running Nottingham’s only
voluntary Hospice in 2007 was approximately £1.8 million. One-fifth
of this comes from statutory services with the remainder has to be
raised from donations, fundraising events, the Hospice Lottery and
the retail activities of local charity shops.
The money raised by Browne Jacobson will go towards funding
additional nursing care for patients. As Mo Beeres, Fundraising and
Marketing Manager at Nottinghamshire Hospice explains it is an area
which is in need of additional resources:
“Last year, the Hospice received referrals for over 22,500
hours for their free Hospice at Home service but a lack of funds
meant we could only supply nurses for 13,500 hours - a
deficit of 9,000 hours. This money will
play an important part in helping us to deliver the quality of care
patients needs and we are grateful to everyone at Browne Jacobson
for their support.”
Over the year, staff at Browne Jacobson have raised thousands of
pounds for good causes. In 2007 alone the firm raised more than
£20,000 for local, regional and international charities and
community initiatives.
In addition to fundraising Browne Jacobson has
built up long-term relationships with many organisations throughout
Nottinghamshire offering free legal advice and volunteer support.
In 2007 27 fee earners from the firm’s Nottingham office
participated in the firm’s pro bono initiative providing legal
advice and professional support valued at more than £12,000.
The firm has also been recognised for it
efforts having won awards for its pro bono and charity work from
Nottinghamshire Law Society.
Mo Beeres, Fundraising and Marketing Manager
and Maureen Osborne, Corporate Fundraiser at Nottinghamshire
Hospice received the cheque from Craig Sharples of Browne
Jacobson’s Community Action Committee.
Craig commented:
“There is a strong community action
culture within the firm and all employees consider it important to
work with and support good causes. Nottinghamshire Hospice was an
extremely popular choice as the firm’s Charity of the Year and we
hope that the money we have raised will make a difference to the
people that need it most.”
