Browne Jacobson partner takes helm at Nottinghamshire Law Society

Browne Jacobson Partner Peter Ellis is the new President of
Nottinghamshire Law Society, taking over from Paul Bacon at the
Society’s AGM.
Peter has been a member of Nottinghamshire Law Society for more
than thirty years and was vice – president last year. During this
time he has also held a number of influential positions regionally
including chair of Nottingham Community Housing Association and The
Malt Cross Trust.
Peter joined Browne Jacobson in 1981 before becoming partner in
1984. As Head of the firm’s Intellectual Property Team, Peter
advises clients on both commercial and intellectual property
disputes. He also sits on The Law Society’s national Intellectual
Property Working Party.
Outlining his objectives for the coming year,
Peter commented : “As president I will be placing an even higher
priority on raising the profile of the Society and its members,
improving links with the wider business community and developing
the Society’s networking credentials amongst its 1000 strong
members.”
During his tenure as president, which runs
until April 2009, the legal profession will start to see changes
outlined in the Legal Services Act finally take shape. The Legal
Services Act is aimed at modernising the legal market through a
number of reforms including allowing new entrants to the profession
and giving consumers better protection.
“The next two years will be both interesting
and challenging for the profession as it adjusts to the Legal
Services Act. New business models are on
the horizon which will revolutionise the way professional services
are organised and purchased. Law firms will have to be ready
to deal with and adapt to the challenges and opportunities the
future will bring.
“The legal community in Nottinghamshire has
made a valuable contribution to the economic prosperity of the
region and continues to provide an exceptional service to clients. It is important as a
profession that we maintain this standard and I will do my
best during my presidency to further promote the interests of
solicitors,” he added.
The immediate Past President of
Nottinghamshire Law Society, Paul Bacon commented “We are
absolutely delighted to have someone of Peter’s calibre
representing this society as its president. We are very much
looking forward to embracing Peter’s vision and working towards
reaching Peter’s goals for the coming year to give our local
lawyers the support they need throughout the challenging but
exciting times ahead”.

was appointed vice – president and Deborah Hutchinson of Ashton
Bond Gigg was appointed deputy vice president.
